The Alzheimer’s Association will be presenting lectures during three Saturdays in November at the Aging and Disability Resource Center in Hilo at 1055 Kinoole St.

On Nov. 2, 9 and 16, there will be a 1 p.m. series on the topics of “What Is Dementia,” “Legal Affairs in Dementia” and “Challenging Behaviors in Dementia.” There will be a 3 p.m. series of movies: “Away From Her,” “Iris” and “I Am Not Fictional.” And there will be a three-part series at 5 p.m., called “Living With Forgetfulness” for anyone who is forgetful and their family members.

On Nov. 2, “What Is Dementia” is a workshop which reviews dementia, the symptoms, warning signs, misconceptions and potential treatments. It includes short videos of persons with the disease, family members of persons with dementia and various professionals.

At 5 p.m., the Alzheimer’s Association will begin the first of the three-week series on forgetfulness. Attendees do not have to have a diagnosis to attend.

On Nov. 9, the workshop will cover information on advance directives, various legal documents and planning strategies. The movie is based on the book “Elegy for Iris” by John Bayley, which tells the true story of English novelist Iris Murdoch’s descent into Alzheimer’s disease and the unconditional love of Bayley, her partner of 40 years.

On Nov. 16, the workshop will cover information on possible causes and types of behaviors that may arise during the course of dementia as well as potential interventions.

Hilo Alzheimer’s Association Program Coordinator Chris Ridley is coordinating the series. Seating is limited. Please call Ridley for reservations at 443-7360.
